“Unfolding Intelligence: The Art and Science of Contemporary Computation” was a virtual, week-long event hosted by the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology from April 1-9, 2021. It is the third in a series of symposia that bring together artists, scientists, engineers, and humanists from a variety of disciplines to address topics of common concern in areas of rapidly evolving research and urgent social relevance.
The goal of this interdisciplinary conversation was to bridge popular and tech-world understandings of artificial intelligence as well as domain-specific, academic, and artistic approaches. The panel discussions staged art-science encounters with the goal of mingling otherwise enclosed areas of research, allowing for new public scrutiny and creating an inclusive field of inquiry that encourages a socially engaged view of our machines.
Elements of the design suite include an animated logo and visual brand system displayed within an event website where the panels were broadcasted virtually and supplemental content, including two digital exhibitions, is accessible. The virtual event broadcasts feature a pre-show presentation, a welcome video, and a livestream of panelists displayed within designed backgrounds. Additionally, all promotion for the symposium was done digitally via video shorts (six in total: a general symposium announcement, plus one per panel and an exhibition) shared on social media and email.
